Upper pin is big in size becuase it is connected with earthing its big size indicates that its a  earthing point

Why earth pin is thicker and bigger in a three pin plug ?

Answer : Less resistance, touches the socket first and detaches last so that all stray current gets grounded to protect the equipment.
