Functions of armature core: 1) Support the armature winding which is placed in its slots.

2) Rotate as driven by the prime mover (generator) or as per the torque produced (motor). 

Hence it is a member that connects the mechanical aspect with the electrical one.

3) Increase the permeance (ease of magnetization) of the magnetic path to increase the magnitude of induced emf for a certain MMF created by the field winding.
